String Music Festival 2003   Back to Top

Philip KashapThere are simply no words to describe Philip Kashap's charm and use of humour as he worked with our young students at both group and solo classes at this year's Spring Festival held May 2 - 3. Watching him in action was truly a sight to behold and worth the price of admission.

Some 120 students took part in this non-competitive yet very educational and informative event. It was two full days of group and solo adjudication for Mr. Kashap but he handled the whole proceedings as easily as he plays his beautiful violin.

Those parents fortunate enough to attend the Book Two Group class tested their thespian skills as they assumed the characters of either his/her Highness Exalted Royalty while the children played Handel’s Chorus. Later, they assumed the sad, lonely personae of two tired and wounded French soldiers trudging home from the Napoleonic War. Students accompanied the drama with "Two Grenadiers".

Saturday saw a series of master classes to which students were assigned according to Book Level. Mr. Kashap worked individually with each student to reinforce technique and to suggest innovative ways of stretching artistry and skill. Most often heard throughout the two days were gentle proddings to the participants to hold his/her instruments high, move with expression, and look as though they actually enjoy what they were doing!

Mr. Kashap accomplished a great deal in one and a half days, greatly due to his engaging and cheerful approach as well as his ability to make each child feel important and safe. Through his work, Mr. Kashap has shown what a fine example and role model he is for the principles and philosophy of the Suzuki Method. Teachers in Calgary have been reaping the benefits of his insightful work with the Festival kids.

The quality of performance this year surpassed those of last year's entries, although essentially, the same students participated. It seemed they were motivated and filled with new purpose this year. Students appeared to be well prepared and happy to perform well before Mr. Kashap, who in turn appeared to enjoy every note that came his way.

With its unbridled success, the Spring Festival promises to be one of CSSA's more popular and anticipated events. The CSSA hopes to expand the group classes next year to include all levels.

String Music Festival 2002   Back to Top

Parkdale United Church made a lovely setting for the first annual CSSA String Festival on March 16th, 2002. Students from the studios of Andrea Hudson, Laura Jones, Hisako Sato, Carmen Wise, and Anne Lyon, performed solos and ensembles before our esteemed adjudicator Louise Stuppard-Thompson.

Louise is a long-time resident of Red Deer but has had a flourishing career as a soloist throughout BC and Alberta. She has a large Suzuki Method studio. She is Principal Second Violinist of the Red Deer Symphony.

Students and teachers alike appreciated and enjoyed her positive, instructive approach in adjudicating students' performance.

Students were ably accompanied by Laura Jones, Carmen Wise, Andrea Hudson, and Steve Komar. We are already planning for next year's CSSA String Festival to be held in March 2003.
